8 thoughts on pirates

1.  A little rain on Halloween does not deter a Pirate in search of sugary treasure.

2.  Some Pirates want to be a shark for Halloween, right up until the morning-of when they suffer a change of heart.

3.  Silly Mama.  Pirates don’t wear necklaces.

4.  Some Pirates insist on purple, not black, eye patches.

5.  Some Pirates wear orange squishy dinosaur balls instead of the more trite parrot as a shoulder companion.

6.  Some Pirates do not like green and blue M&Ms, “Guess why?  They’re kinda not my favorite colors.”

7.  Some Pirates insist on shoving a fistful of green and blue M&Ms in their Mama’s mouth since green and blue are suspected to be Mama’s favorite colors.

8.  Why do Pirates say “Aaarrrrrrgh?”  (Really–could someone tell me?  I need an answer to this question that just. won’t. go. away.)

Pirates say aaarrrrrgh because they are growling because we know all bad guys growl, and pirates are bad guys. Even Peter Pan knows they are bad!!
And some pirates are JUST TOO CUTE!!! (which means not all pirates are bad guys. Or maybe all REAL pirates are bad guys but pretend ones aren’t.) : )

  3. Pirates say Aaaarrrrgh just to clear their throat and get your attention, they may not even say anything…… you will know what they want without asking.

Pirates only wear necklaces that they find in the treasure… and then, it is just to claim it so no one else can eat it… we are talking about candy necklaces here.

Thank you for the lovely thoughts…. made my day!

I always thought it was pretty much the only sound that you can make (possibly the only threatening sound) when you have a knife in your mouth. Of course, you have the knife in your mouth because you are climbing on board another ship and need the knife to be readily available (plus it looks pretty scary too).

This theory depends on a number of anachronisms so I looked some more….and found a potentially more plausible series of explanations on Quora (http://www.quora.com/Is-there-any-documented-evidence-that-pirates-ever-actually-said-Arrrgh) with a link to this very useful post on dialectblog (http://dialectblog.com/2011/05/24/pirate-accent/). Dialect Blog seems to align with others that mention “Arrrgh” sounds like the accents of the English West Country, where many pirates from the golden age of piracy were born….it’s also the same place where the actor that Disney cast to play many of the pirate roles in the 1950’s was from.

My personal favorite (outside of my own suggestion) is that if your teeth and finger nails fell out from scurvy then you would probably saw “Arrgh” too.

Feel free to offer any of those explanations to Little Friend on my behalf. 🙂

She really is super cute. Thanks for another great post.

    Love,
    Big Friend

p.s. I’m going to go an add my knife in the teeth theory to collective wisdom of the Internet.

    Why do pirates say,”Arrgh?”

The sea water gets into their pores, which causes a painful irritation of the lymph nodes that reside just below the skin. This caused the emission of thousands of white blood cells all over the body, including the brain. When white blood cells accumulate in the brain, it causes slurred speech. This, combined with a pirate’s already limited vocabulary, causes them to say argh periodically throughout the day.
